About The Show
Sunday Coffee House is a one-hour radio program featuring music that can generally be described as “Contemporary Folk”. On this program, that encompasses the following genres and sub-genres: Acoustic, Singer-songwriter, Folk, Celtic, Roots, Americana/Canadiana, Blues, Bluegrass, Country-folk and others!
The program began in November 1993 as “Sunday Morning Coffee”, broadcast (oddly enough) Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 11:00am on CJLX-FM 92.3 in Belleville, Ontario, Canada. In late 1995 the show adopted its current one-hour format (10-11am). In 2000 the program began a repeat broadcast at 10pm Sundays, necessitating the dropping of the word “Morning” from the title, hence the name change to “Sunday Coffee House”. In 2003, the program began airing on CKHA-FM 100.9 (aka Canoe-FM) in Haliburton, Ontario. In the fall of 2005, the originating station, CJLX, underwent a major power upgrade and frequency change. Now known as 91X (91.3FM), the improved signal greatly increased the potential audience for the show. Now, as of the fall of 2006,
91X-FM streams its audio on the internet, enabling listeners worldwide to listen to Sunday Coffee House, as well as all other 91X programming.
Originally the music on the show was mostly by Canadian artists, due mainly to the fact much of the music in possession at that time happened to be from musicians from this country. Now-a-days, the show is typically about 50% Canadian with artists from the U.S. or abroad rounding out the show.
About The Host
The program is hosted by Greg Schatzmann. A lover of music, but not a musician! Unlike many hosts of folk-music programs, Greg doesn’t play a musical instrument nor does he sing (outside the shower). None-the-less he has a great appreciation for those who can create music!
A career broadcaster, Greg grew up on the music of the 70’s and 80’s (what we now refer to as “Classic Rock”). In the early 80’s the new music scene was burgeoning,
and Greg really tuned in to the new sounds that were coming primarily from the U.K. and then Canada. It was sometime in the late 80’s that the host discovered the contemporary folk genre and found it very appealing. Picking up the occasional CD
and attending a few concerts and festivals, Greg thought it would be great to host a program that showcased this type of music. A year after taking on the position of Station Manager at CJLX-FM, at Loyalist College in Belleville, Ontario the program hit the air.
